6. Welcome to Fall
October 13, 2017

I have just spent a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The foliage was just starting to turn into a wonderful koliascope of colors. Unseasonably warm then while there, we are now getting back to the usual temperatures of October. The gardens are wilting down, the skins on the tomatoes are thicker, canning and freezing are in full operation. Corn stalks are turning brown in the fields, and as the leaves die back, acres of bright orange pumpkins are evident against the backdrop of browning leaves. Sumacs along the edge of the swamps are bright red and are probably the earliest o... (read more)

7. My Last Day?
June 18, 2017

I awoke at 5:37 AM feeling well-rested and content, but rather peculiar without knowing why. Something was definitely off—not weird off, but like a revelation was about to be disclosed. As I opened the plantation shutters to the rising sun, there was a certain glow bouncing off terracotta roof tiles that reminded me of the Mediterranean. I thought of the French Riviera, and wished I could be there again, but this time as a young man during the 1950s before the turmoil of invading refugees from the Middle East: the velvet sea, the gay nightlife at the cafes on the waterfront, music in the air—j... 9. Outdoor teak chairs
April 08, 2017

The majority of the teak furniture that we see today was grown in Indonesia and other southeast Asian islands. Because of the water repelling properties it was originally used in the shipbuilding business and that is why we now see outdoor furniture made from teak wood. Teak is very durable and will last a lifetime. A most affordable teak piece of furniture is the armchair. If you are looking for something to warm up your front porch or patio the armchair is most appropriate. Two armchairs with a table in between would be very sylish and practical. 15. The Reaper Makes a House Call
January 28, 2017

Five years ago I wrote an article that was deleted from the archives. At the time, I lived in the Midwest, and was the picture of perfect health. Since moving to the Southwest a year and a half ago, little annoying things have been happening to (indestructible) me: sporadic pains in the back and hip, a dislocated knee, “slow” eyes, thinning hair—incidents I never had to deal with before.
